New Series from the Creator of My Wife Has No Emotions: Kamihiki no Monarch Begins

Jiro Sugiura, one of the beloved names in the manga world, has returned with a new project that will excite his fans. In the combined 22nd and 23rd issue of Weekly Shonen Sunday released on April 28, Kamihiki no Monarch (The God Tier Pull Monarch), written by Sugiura and illustrated by Rei Okiumi, officially began serialization. Originally born as a web series on pixiv in 2023, this story has managed to find a place in one of Japan's most established magazines following the great interest it received.
Kamihiki no Monarch brings the "gacha" mechanics, which are indispensable to modern gaming culture, into a fantasy world. At the center of the story is a character named Takemoto who is transported to another world. Takemoto's greatest trump card in this new world is his ability to summon god-tier heroes through a gacha game on his smartphone. The series tells how the luck factor can turn into a "cheat power" in a struggle for survival in a fun and immersive language. Rei Okiumi's (Ubaumono, Ubawarerumono) detailed illustrations add visual depth to Sugiura's creative narrative.
Author Jiro Sugiura is particularly known for his series Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai (My Wife Has No Emotions), which stands out for its emotional depth. This work, which naively explores the relationship between a robot and a human, also received an anime adaptation in 2024. Sugiura's other works, such as Nisemono no Renkinjutsushi, also prove how competent the author is in different genres. With his new series, Sugiura is embarking on an isekai adventure that is more action-oriented and embellished with pop culture elements.
This new beginning also coincides with a very active period for Weekly Shonen Sunday. In the same issue of the magazine, the results of the third official popularity poll for the phenomenal series Sousou no Frieren were also announced. In this period where Genau surprisingly took the top spot, the inclusion of fresh blood like Kamihiki no Monarch into the magazine has sparked great curiosity among readers. For manga enthusiasts who are familiar with gacha games and love stories where luck determines everything, this series seems to be a candidate to be one of the most talked-about works of the coming period.
