New Manga from Jiro Sugiura: "Kamihiki no Monarch" Begins in Weekly Shonen Sunday

Shogakukan's long-standing magazine Weekly Shonen Sunday is preparing for an ambitious start to the spring season. According to the official announcement in the 21st issue released on April 22, 2026, the new manga series Kamihiki no Monarch, written by Jiro Sugiura and illustrated by Rei Okiumi, will meet readers on April 28. The series will kick off with its first chapter in the magazine's 22-23 combined issue.
The series' author, Jiro Sugiura, reached a wide fanbase with his work Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai (My Wife Has No Emotion), in which he blended science fiction and romance genres. This series, which began in 2019 and hit screens with an anime adaptation in 2024, received great acclaim for exploring the emotional bond between a robot and a human. Sugiura's unique storytelling will now be taken to a different dimension with Kamihiki no Monarch.
Rei Okiumi, who is responsible for the illustrations, is no stranger to the manga world. Having previously worked on projects such as Boku no Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions, Okiumi is known for his dynamic and detailed drawing style. As an interesting detail, the duo of Sugiura and Okiumi previously worked together on the Nise Seiken Monogatari series. This new project brings the duo's successful collaboration to a giant platform like Weekly Shonen Sunday.
The series' title, Kamihiki no Monarch, contains the term "Kamihiki," which is used in gacha games and means "godly pull." This suggests that the story may revolve around a "Monarch" struggle shaped by luck factors, the gaming world, or gacha mechanics. Being published in a magazine that hosts legends like Detective Conan and Sousou no Frieren increases expectations regarding the series' potential.
Manga lovers are waiting for April 28 to see how Sugiura's character depth and Okiumi's visual power will combine. Kamihiki no Monarch targets both those interested in gacha culture and those looking for a quality shonen story. The series is expected to be one of the most ambitious productions of the magazine's new era.
