Master of Horror Manga Kazuo Umezu Commemorated with a Giant Carnival in Kichijoji: "UMEZZ GUWASHI CARNIVAL 2026"

Kichijoji, one of Tokyo's most beloved neighborhoods, is preparing to host one of the most eccentric and influential names in the manga world between May 1 and May 31, 2026. Held in honor of Kazuo Umezu, known as the "God of Horror Manga," the "UMEZZ GUWASHI CARNIVAL 2026" will both celebrate the artist's legacy and offer an interactive experience for his fans. The event will feature a puzzle walk throughout the district, a special pop-up store at Kichijoji PARCO, and a themed cafe.
The most notable event of the carnival, the "Manga Stroll," will take participants on a mysterious exploration of the streets of Kichijoji. Fans who purchase puzzle kits, available in three different difficulty levels, will step into Umezu's surreal world by following clues hidden at various spots around the neighborhood. Additionally, a store named "Shutchou!! UMEZZ HOUSE," inspired by the artist's iconic red-and-white striped house, will open on the second floor of Kichijoji PARCO. Here, pieces from the artist's personal collection will be exhibited, and there will be special photo areas where you can perform the iconic "Guwashi" hand gesture.
This event serves as a special tribute to the 90th birth anniversary of Kazuo Umezu, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 88. Known for masterpieces such as The Drifting Classroom, Makoto-chan, and My Name is Shingo, the artist profoundly influenced not only the horror genre but also science fiction and comedy. Following his passing, the UMEZZ company, founded by the artist, emphasized his vision by stating, "Umezu wanted his works to spread throughout the world and be read forever." Umezu, who inspired today's giants like Junji Ito, had become a cultural symbol of Kichijoji, where he lived for many years.
Throughout the carnival, shops and restaurants in the district will also join in the excitement by offering Umezu-themed products and menus. Decorations referencing the artist's famous red-and-white striped shirts, in particular, will turn Kichijoji into a living manga panel. If you have the chance to be in Tokyo during those dates, this carnival offers an unmissable opportunity to get to know the world of this most colorful and chilling genius of manga history up close.
