The Legend of Kingdom Returns to the Stage: Second Stage Play "Inheritance" Announced!

We have exciting news for Kingdom fans! The legendary manga series written by Yasuhisa Hara, which tells the epic story of China's Warring States period, is preparing to hit the stage once again with a second play. According to the official announcement by TOHO, the new production, titled Kingdom II -Keishō- (Kingdom II -Inheritance-), will meet audiences in August 2026. Hiroki Miura and Akira Takano, who brought the series' protagonist Shin (Li Xin) to life in the first play, will once again alternate in this challenging role.
This new announcement carries even more significance as it coincides with the series' 20th-anniversary celebrations. Serialized in Weekly Young Jump magazine since 2006, Kingdom solidified its title as one of the best-selling manga series in history, surpassing 120 million copies in circulation worldwide as of January 2026. The first play, which was staged at the prestigious Imperial Theatre in Tokyo in 2023, presented the "Seikyou Rebellion" arc—covering the first five volumes of the manga—as a magnificent visual feast and played to sold-out crowds. The new play is expected to delve deeper into Shin's rise as a soldier and his bond with legendary generals.
The actors playing Shin are not the only familiar faces in the cast; master actor Yuichiro Yamaguchi is also returning in the role of the fan-favorite legendary general Ou Ki (Wang Qi). Known as "2.5D" in the performing arts world, these types of adaptations offer fans the manga's dynamic battle scenes and emotional depth in a live atmosphere. Bringing a series like Kingdom, where thousands of soldiers clash, to the theater stage requires immense production power, and the success of the first play has raised expectations for this new production significantly.
The Kingdom universe continues to grow not just on stage, but in every field. With its anime having completed its sixth season and a fifth live-action film scheduled for release in the summer of 2026, the series is truly in its golden age. The performances, which will begin in Tokyo in August and September, will continue in Osaka in September. Details regarding ticket sales and the full cast are expected to be announced in the coming months. If you happen to be in Japan during those dates, we suggest you don't miss the chance to watch this epic struggle live!
