Kodama Tales Brings Hisae Iwaoka's Enchanting Manga 'The Magical Forest of Hoshigahara' to English

We have great news for manga lovers! Kodama Tales, one of the new generation boutique publishers, has announced that it has licensed the English publishing rights for the beloved series The Magical Forest of Hoshigahara (known in Japanese as Hoshigahara Aomanjuu no Mori) by one of the most elegant pens in the manga world, Hisae Iwaoka. According to the official announcement, the first volume of this enchanting series will hit shelves in November 2026. This move, which will bring Iwaoka's unique fairytale-like and melancholic narrative to Western readers, has already created excitement among collectors.
Originally serialized in Japan between 2008 and 2015 and consisting of 5 volumes in total, this seinen manga invites readers into a mysterious world known as the "ghost forest." The story centers on a young man named Soichi who lives in an old mansion deep within this forest. The Hoshigahara forest has the power to grant consciousness to every object or creature that enters its borders; this makes the forest a unique place filled with talking animals, animated objects, and spirits. While Soichi tries to find remedies for the troubles of these supernatural beings, he also searches for ways to reunite with his loved one in the spirit realm.
The creator of the series, Hisae Iwaoka, holds a highly respected position in the manga industry, and this work is one of the projects where she showcases her mastery. The artist notably made history by winning the Grand Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2011 for her science fiction drama Saturn Apartments (Dosei Mansion). The Magical Forest of Hoshigahara similarly proved its quality by being among the works recommended by the jury at the same festival in 2010. Iwaoka's works are generally known for their soft drawing style and "healing" (iyashikei) atmosphere that touches the depths of the human soul; this makes the series not just a fantasy story, but also an emotional journey.
So why is this news so important? Kodama Tales, as a subsidiary of Kyodo Printing (the official printer of Weekly Shonen Jump), is a publisher that places incredible importance on print quality, paper texture, and staying true to the original work. If you love stories that blend supernatural elements with a peaceful pace like Mushishi or Natsume's Book of Friends, this series is for you. With the publication schedule starting in November 2026, the gates of this mysterious forest will be opened to the whole world. The series is planned to be offered in both physical and digital formats, so it is worth staying tuned!
