Koukousei Kazoku Live-Action Movie is Coming: Release Date and First Trailer Shared!
One of the most unique comedy series from Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, Koukousei Kazoku (High School Family), is preparing to meet its fans with a live-action film adaptation. According to the official announcement, the film, based on the work by Ryo Nakama, will be released in theaters across Japan on January 8, 2027. Originally planned for the fall of 2026, the production has been postponed to January due to updates in the production process. Along with the announcement, the first promotional video, teaser poster, and cinema brochures reflecting the film's atmosphere were shared with fans.
The plot of the film revolves around young Kotaro Ietani, who wants to start his high school life with high hopes. However, Kotaro's dreams are shattered when he learns on his first day of school that his entire family has enrolled in the same high school as him. Not only his father Ichiro, but his mother Shizuka, his eight-year-old sister Haruka, and even the family cat Gomez put on their school uniforms and start classes in the same grade as Kotaro. This absurd and laughter-filled story will bring to the big screen the chaos created by a family trying to realize their educational dreams all together.
The cast of the production consists of quite remarkable names. Legendary SMAP member Shingo Katori plays the father, Ichiro, while Riisa Naka brings the mother, Shizuka, to life. The protagonist Kotaro is played by Jun Saito, and the little sister Haruka is played by Yuno Nagao. The film is directed by Toichiro Ruto, known for successful live-action adaptations such as The Way of the Househusband and Komi Can't Communicate. The screenplay was written by Makoto Ueda. In an interview, lead actor Katori made fans smile by stating that, like his character Ichiro, he is only a middle school graduate in real life, and therefore he understands the character's longing for high school very well.
The original manga series Koukousei Kazoku was published in Weekly Shonen Jump between September 2020 and February 2023 and was compiled into a total of 11 volumes. Author Ryo Nakama had previously achieved great success with the Isobe Isobee Monogatari series. The film adaptation of this gag (absurd comedy) genre work is highly anticipated, especially in Japan. The slogan "Let's go to school together again today!" on the promotional poster stands out as one of the most important details reflecting the spirit of the series. Although there is no information yet regarding the international release date of the film, it is expected to arrive on digital platforms following its theatrical run in Japan.
