Kowloon Generic Romance Manga Ends: Jun Mayuzuki's Mysterious Story Concludes

Kowloon Generic Romance, which possesses one of the most unique atmospheres in the manga world, bid farewell to its readers with its finale in the 20th issue of Weekly Young Jump, published on April 16. Written by Jun Mayuzuki and running since 2019, the series took readers on a journey filled with nostalgia, melancholy, and mystery. The 10th and final volume, which will crown this long-running adventure, will hit shelves in Japan on April 17.
The story is set in a fictional and dystopian version of Hong Kong's legendary Kowloon Walled City. The manga, which focuses on the complex romance between our protagonists Reiko Kujirai and Hajime Kudo, does not just offer a love story; it also contains a deep science fiction mystery regarding the characters' identities and the reality of the city. Mayuzuki's detailed art style and narrative reflecting the characters' inner worlds quickly turned the series into a modern genre blend (seinen, romance, mystery).
Author Jun Mayuzuki had previously proven her talent with the globally acclaimed series After the Rain (Koi wa Ameagari no You ni). Kowloon Generic Romance continued this success by being nominated for the prestigious Manga Taisho awards in 2021 and placing third in the male reader category of the "Kono Manga ga Sugoi!" list. Although the end of the series brings bittersweet feelings for fans, the fact that the story concluded as planned without leaving narrative gaps is being met with great respect by the community.
Even though the manga series has ended on paper, the Kowloon Generic Romance universe will continue to live on screens. According to official announcements made in late 2024, both an anime adaptation and a live-action film of the series are set to meet audiences in 2025. These projects are seen as a great opportunity to reach a wider audience who have not yet discovered the manga and to present this fascinating atmosphere to existing fans from a different perspective.
