Legendary Manga "Lone Wolf and Cub" Comes to the Kabuki Stage: Starring Nakamura Shidō and His Son!

One of the most deeply rooted and impressive works in the manga world, Lone Wolf and Cub (Kozure Ōkami), is preparing for a magnificent comeback through traditional Japanese theater. This epic story, written by Kazuo Koike and illustrated by Goseki Kojima, will be staged as a new Kabuki play at the iconic Kabukiza Theatre in Tokyo this June. For fans of the series, this special production is not just an adaptation, but a cultural encounter.
The detail that makes this production truly special is the father-son collaboration in the lead roles. The character of Ogami Ittō, a disgraced executioner turned assassin, will be played by one of Japan's most talented actors, Nakamura Shidō. In the role of his young son Daigoro, who lies at the heart of the story, Shidō’s real-life second son, Nakamura Natsuki, will take the stage. The play, which will run from June 3 to 25, has been announced as the most notable part of the "June Grand Kabuki" (Rokugatsu Ōkabuki) program.
Published between 1970 and 1976, Lone Wolf and Cub is a masterpiece that has left deep marks on popular culture not only in Japan but around the world. Telling the story of a samurai who loses his wife due to a conspiracy by the Yagyu clan and is forced into exile, embarking on a journey of revenge with his son, the work inspired legendary names like Frank Miller with its cinematic narrative and has formed the foundation for modern productions such as The Mandalorian. Although the series has been adapted for cinema and television many times before, this new interpretation on the Kabuki stage will combine the story's tragic and epic tone with the aesthetics of traditional art.
This adaptation is the freshest example of the "Shin-Kabuki" (New Kabuki) movement, which has become popular in recent years and blends modern stories with traditional theater. Nakamura Shidō's previous voice acting work in productions like Death Note (Ryuk) and his proximity to popular culture prove that this project will bring together both classic theater lovers and young manga enthusiasts. If you find yourself in Tokyo in June, we recommend you do not miss this historic performance; as the story of Ogami Ittō and Daigoro will be taken to a whole new dimension with the magnificent costumes and music of Kabuki.
