Mad Cave Studios Adapts Classic Contra Games into a 12-Issue Comic Book Series

The legendary Contra series is stepping into a new medium. Mad Cave Studios has announced that it is developing a 12-issue comic book series based on Konami's classic run-and-gun games. According to Anime News Network, the first issue of the series will be released in January 2027. This marks the first time the Contra universe has received such an extensive comic book adaptation.
So why now? The original Contra, released in 1987, took arcades and the Nintendo Entertainment System by storm at the time. The series, which secured its place in pop culture especially thanks to the famous Konami Code (↑↑↓↓←→←→BA), has inspired dozens of sequels, spin-offs, and even a Netflix animated series over time. The fact that 2027 coincides with the 40th anniversary of the first game shows that this adaptation serves as a celebration.
Mad Cave Studios is a rising independent publisher known in recent years for taking on comics for major brands like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. This new 12-issue adventure of the Contra series aims to bring the chaotic action and characters of the games to the page. Although the writing and art teams have not yet been announced, it is stated that the studio is approaching the project with great excitement.
This announcement is particularly exciting for adult fans nostalgic for 90s gaming culture and for new generations of readers. Following the mixed reviews received by recent games such as Contra: Rogue Corps (2019), the comic book format could bring a breath of fresh air to the series. More details (cover art, creative team) are expected in the coming months. It is already a matter of curiosity to see how much Mad Cave will explore the storytelling potential of Contra with this adaptation.
The first issue of the series will be available for sale digitally and physically in January 2027. Pre-orders are expected to open in late 2026. We will continue to keep you informed as official statements come from Konami and Mad Cave.
