New Manga from Psycho-Pass Writer Makoto Fukami: Chōgen Market Heroes: Menko Reverser Kakeru Has Begun!

Makoto Fukami, the master writer behind dark and action-packed productions such as Psycho-Pass, Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka, and Berserk (2016), is turning his focus to a completely different world this time. Fukami officially launched his new manga series, Chōgen Market Heroes: Menko Reverser Kakeru, which he prepared alongside illustrator Shūsaku Namikawa, on March 28. The series, which meets readers via Shogakukan's popular web platform Coro Coro Comic, offers a modern and fantastic interpretation of a traditional game.
This new series is actually based on the upcoming board game titled Chōgen Market Heroes, designed by Creatures (the giant name behind the Pokémon Trading Card Game). The story takes place in an original world where heroes are part of different market groups. Our main character, Kakeru, is trying to climb to the top in this competitive world that combines the traditional Japanese card game Menko (a game of flipping the opponent's cards by hitting them on the ground) with strategic "reverser" mechanics.
Looking at Makoto Fukami's career, we see that he is generally known for military themes, psychological thrillers, and dark fantasy elements. However, Chōgen Market Heroes showcases a more energetic side of the author that focuses on game mechanics and character development. Collaborating with a giant name in the gaming world like Creatures shows that the manga is not just a form of storytelling, but also the precursor to a vast multimedia project. The rise of board games in the manga world (as seen in examples like Hi Score Girl or After School Dice Club) seems set to gain a new dimension with this series.
For board game enthusiasts and Fukami fans, this release offers an exciting example of how traditional Japanese culture can be blended with modern game design. Brought to life with Shūsaku Namikawa's dynamic illustrations, Chōgen Market Heroes: Menko Reverser Kakeru targets both strategy lovers and those looking for an immersive coming-of-age story. How the rules of the game will deepen in future chapters and the opponents Kakeru will face are already a subject of curiosity.
