Manga and Real Life Meet: Blue Lock Author Kaneshiro in Interview with Legendary Footballer Nakata

The wall between the Blue Lock universe and the real football field is breaking down. The manga's author, Muneyuki Kaneshiro, is meeting with Japan's legendary number 10, Hidetoshi Nakata. This special interview will meet readers in the 29th issue of Weekly Shonen Magazine, to be published on June 17, 2025.
The conversation will blend Blue Lock's core philosophy—the competition of conceited and selfish strikers to become the world's best—with Nakata's real experiences on the field. Nakata played for Italian giants Perugia, Parma, and Fiorentina during his career and was Japan's star in the 2002 World Cup. The real-life reflections of the 'egoist striker' profile that Kaneshiro drew in the manga will be examined up close for the first time in this interview.
The Blue Lock series has been published weekly since 2018 and has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. Following the anime adaptation, whose first season was highly acclaimed in 2022-2023, the film Blue Lock: Episode Nagi was released this past April. Manga fans are wondering whether this interview with a football legend might contain hints for the next season or a new side story.
Similar meetings have occurred before in Weekly Shonen Magazine; for example, Haikyuu!! author Haruichi Furudate conducted interviews with real volleyball players. But this time, Kaneshiro discussing the 'selfish striker' concept that forms the basis of his manga with someone who has lived that concept on the field will add a whole new depth to the series' subtext. Especially seeing the real-world counterparts of the motivations of characters like Isagi Yoichi and Rin Itoshi is a great source of excitement for both readers and anime viewers.
The magazine will hit shelves on June 17. Although the full text of the interview will be published in Japanese, international fans are expected to follow translations on social media. It is also rumored that this meeting could be a preview for the upcoming second season of Blue Lock or a new spin-off project. An unmissable deal for football and manga enthusiasts.
