Manga “Unbreakable ~The Unbeaten~” First Volume Released: Kobayashi Takiji’s Struggle with the Tokkō Becomes a Comic

“Unbreakable ~The Unbeaten~” (アンブレイカブル~敗れざる者たち~) manga was released with its first volume on June 19, 2024. The work dramatically portrays the final period of the famous Japanese writer Kobayashi Takiji’s (蟹工船 / The Crab Cannery Ship) life and the tension with the feared state police organization Tokkō (Special Higher Police).
The story comes to life with a screenplay by Yanagi Hiroshi and illustrations by Kaishō Tamaki. Yanagi is known for his screenwriting career on productions such as “Kuroshitsuji” and “Joker Game”, while Kaishō previously attracted attention for his work on series like “Kuro no Shoukanshi” and “Shuumatsu no Walküre”. This collaboration is seen as an exciting step in reinterpreting a historical figure in manga format.
Kobayashi Takiji was one of the pioneers of proletarian literature in the early 1930s, depicting the working-class struggle and the brutality of capitalism in Japan. His most famous work, “The Crab Cannery Ship” (Yengeç Konserve Gemisi), is a masterpiece about the exploitation of workers. However, this political stance made him a target of the government. Arrested by the Tokkō in 1933, Kobayashi died as a result of torture. His death became a symbol of censorship and political oppression in Japan. The manga offers a fictional retelling of this tragic process.
The first volume of the manga focuses on Kobayashi’s constant surveillance by the Tokkō, the banning of his works, and the psychological war with the police. The atmosphere of the period is successfully reflected through Kaishō’s detailed illustrations and Yanagi’s tense dialogues. The publishing company announced that the series is planned as two volumes, with the second volume expected in November 2024. Although documentaries and films have previously been made about Takiji Kobayashi, this manga has the potential to bring his story to a young readership.
For those curious about Japan’s pre-war police state structure or fans of historical dramas, “Unbreakable ~The Unbeaten~” is a work strong in both emotional and political aspects. Whether a digital or physical printed version of the work will be released in Turkey is not yet clear, but it is expected to attract interest on international platforms as the Japanese publication continues.
