Maō Tōbatsu Shita Ato Manga Series Ends: Is the Hero's Retirement Dream Over?

The beloved manga series that explores what happens after the "happy ending" in a fantasy world, Maō Tōbatsu Shita Ato (Full title: Maō Tōbatsu Shita Ato, Medatanai yō ni Iiwake o Hineridashiteita Ore, Nazoka Bishōjo-tachi ni Tsukimatowareru), has officially come to an end. Illustrated by ROHGUN and based on the original story by Touwa Akatsuki, the series completed its journey that began in April 2019 as of March 2026. Published on Kadokawa's Young Ace Up platform, the manga told the story of a hero who tries to live an ordinary life after defeating the Demon King, only to find himself constantly caught in chaos.
The series actually began its life in 2018 as a web novel on the popular platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Later adapted into printed books under the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko label, the work is considered one of the successful examples of the "post-hero" genre. Illustrator ROHGUN successfully translated the original character designs into the manga format, helping the series reach a wide fan base. The story took the classic "hero saves the world" theme a step further, addressing the bureaucracy, social expectations, and the hero's search for peace after victory with a humorous tone.
Our main character is a young man whose only wish after defeating the Demon King is to live without drawing attention to himself. However, this "retirement" plan is constantly thwarted by the talented and beautiful young girls surrounding him. Throughout the manga, the hero's efforts to protect his secret identity and the harem dynamics he unintentionally falls into both amused and excited readers. With the series finale, fans had the chance to see how the story of this entertaining cast of characters was tied up.
The conclusion of Maō Tōbatsu Shita Ato marks the end of an era for fans of the genre. In recent years, the popularity of works focusing on the aftermath of the story in "Isekai" and "Fantasy" genres has been on the rise. Although the release date for the final volume (tankōbon) of the manga has not yet been finalized, collectors are already waiting to add the complete set of the series to their libraries. Touwa Akatsuki's other projects and ROHGUN's future works are already a subject of curiosity.
