Legendary Manga Artist Mayu Shinjo Celebrates 30th Anniversary with a Massive Exhibition in Tokyo

Mayu Shinjo, one of the most influential figures in the shoujo and josei manga genres, is preparing to celebrate her 30th anniversary in the art world with a massive event. The special exhibition titled "Kai-Kan-Dan-Shi (KAI-DAN)," which serves as a tribute to the artist's career, will open its doors from April 25 to May 17 at GoFa (Gallery of Fantastic Art), one of Tokyo's renowned art venues. This exhibition aims to go beyond a classic illustration showcase by blending manga, music, and live performance culture into a single experience.
Stepping into her professional career in 1994 with "Anata no Iro ni Somaritai," Mayu Shinjo changed the manga perception of a generation, particularly with the "ikemen" (handsome male) characters she created in the late 90s and early 2000s. Her cult work Kaikan Phrase (Sensual Phrase), which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and defined an era, serves as the main inspiration for the exhibition. The exhibition's title, "KAI-DAN," is both a nod to this legendary series and a focus on the charismatic male characters born from Shinjo's pen.
The most striking element that distinguishes this event from other manga exhibitions is the special collaboration with the Japanese entertainment and music giant LDH. With the support of LDH, which manages world-famous groups like EXILE and J SOUL BROTHERS, the exhibition space will feature musical experiences synchronized with manga panels and elements inspired by the performing arts. The themes of "rock star" and "passion," which Shinjo frequently explores in her works, will combine with LDH's production power to provide visitors with a multi-dimensional atmosphere.
Throughout her career, Mayu Shinjo has been known not only for her romance stories but also for her stance within the industry. Her decision to part ways with publishing giant Shogakukan in 2007 to work independently is considered a significant turning point regarding artist rights in the manga industry. This exhibition serves as a summary of the artist's 30-year journey, which has been both challenging and filled with success. During the exhibition, fans will have the opportunity to see the artist's original hand-drawn sketches, purchase limited-edition merchandise, and witness Shinjo's artistic evolution up close.
