Moeko to Hatake to Otera Gohan Volume 1 Released: A Temple Food Break from the Fatigue of Modern Life

The intense stress and burnout brought on by modern work life have inspired a new and soothing story in the manga world. The highly anticipated first volume of the series Moeko to Hatake to Otera Gohan (Moeko, the Field, and Temple Food), written and illustrated by Ayami Kanemori, hit shelves on May 15, 2026, under the Akita Shoten label. Beyond being just a food manga, the series offers readers a healing process intertwined with nature.
At the center of the story is 28-year-old office worker Moeko Wakairo. Having believed since middle school that "putting in the effort" would open every door, Moeko suffers a physical and mental collapse in her fifth year of work due to overwork. Unable to get out of bed one morning, the young woman takes a break from her job and returns to her hometown. There, she begins working in her grandfather's field and discovers the healing power of touching the soil and growing vegetables. During this process, her path crosses again with her childhood friend Hodaka, the son of a temple priest, and she steps into the depths of the temple kitchen (shojin ryori).
The most important feature that distinguishes the series from its peers is the giant names behind it. The original concept support for the manga is provided by Masayuki Qusumi, the creator of the legendary Kodoku no Gourmet series. Qusumi's style, which turns the act of eating into a ritual, is felt in this series as well. Furthermore, the accuracy of the food and Buddhist philosophy is supervised by Kakuho Aoe, the head priest of Ryokusenji Temple in Tokyo and a famous "cooking priest." Aoe adds authentic depth to the series with his traditional vegetarian recipes enriched with modern touches.
