Nagisa Furuya's 'Kimi wa Natsu no Naka' Manga Adaptation Gets Drama: Trailer and Masaharu Fukuyama's 'Hotaru' Song Announced

Nagisa Furuya's manga adaptation of the same name, "Kimi wa Natsu no Naka" (In the Middle of Summer), has seen an exciting development for its live-action drama. It was announced that the theme song will be "Hotaru" (Firefly) performed by Masaharu Fukuyama, one of Japan's most renowned musicians. Along with the announcement, the first promotional trailer featuring the song was officially released.
The trailer opens with images reflecting the hot and melancholic atmosphere of summer. Accompanied by Fukuyama's soft and emotional vocals, scenes of the main characters getting closer are shown. "Hotaru" is an original piece with lyrics and composition by Fukuyama. The artist has previously provided songs for dramatic series like "Kōri no Hana", but this time he accompanies a story entirely themed around youth and summer.
The manga "Kimi wa Natsu no Naka" was serialized in Kadokawa's "Comic Newtype" magazine from 2017 to 2021. The story centers on a summer romance between high school senior Yūto and the popular but introverted girl Moe. The manga drew attention for its delicate emotional descriptions and treatment of the transience of summer, ranking high in the "This Manga is Amazing!" survey in 2021. Furuya's other works include "Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjō" and "Ame no Hi no Ie".
Rikiya Imaizumi (director of the "Kimi no Suizō o Tabetai" drama series) is in the director's seat. The lead roles are played by young actors Shūto Ayabe (Yūto) and Mio Kudo (Moe). A stage play of "Kimi wa Natsu no Naka" was previously performed, but this is the first live-action adaptation. Although the release date has not been finalized, the release of the trailer indicates that production is in its final stages.
This adaptation is a great source of excitement for manga fans. Especially the inclusion of a song by a name like Fukuyama is a strong indicator of the project's quality. Following the trailer, posts with the hashtag #KimiwaNatsunoNaka have increased on social media. New announcements regarding the release date and additional cast are expected in the coming weeks. If the series can reflect the emotional intensity of the manga on screen, it is sure to be one of the most talked-about dramas this summer.
