A New Sumo Legend Begins in Young Magazine: Kakuriki Meets Readers

Kodansha's long-standing and popular magazine Young Magazine launched an exciting series blending sports and drama in its 20th issue, dated April 13, 2026. Kakuriki, by Gohoubi, combines the harsh, disciplined, and traditional atmosphere of the sumo world with a story of a seemingly impossible comeback. At the center of the series lies the epic struggle of a wrestler who returns from the brink of death and refuses to give up on his dreams.
The story revolves around 32-year-old Daigo Senzen, who once rose to the rank of Ozeki, the second-highest rank in the sumo world. After waking up from a long three-year coma and clinging to life once again, Senzen proves that despite being physically worn out and older, the fire in his soul has not been extinguished. Challenging both young rivals and his own biological limits, the character has only one goal: to reach the absolute pinnacle of the sumo world and the most sacred title, Yokozuna.
Young Magazine is a platform known for its realistic narrative style, having previously hosted globally acclaimed seinen (targeted at adult men) works such as Akira, Initial D, and The Fable. Sumo-themed manga have gained a special place among fans of the genre in recent years, especially with the success of series like Hinomaru Sumo. Kakuriki continues this tradition while blending the main character's quest for a "second chance" with the magazine's characteristic, gritty, and emotionally deep storytelling style.
While the age of 32 is generally considered a time when a wrestler is nearing the end of their career in the sport of sumo, the addition of a three-year coma process turns Senzen's journey into a true "underdog" story. This new work by Gohoubi stands out not just as a sports manga, but also as a drama that pushes the limits of human will. In the upcoming chapters of the series, we will follow Senzen's reckoning with both his opponents in the sand ring (dohyo) and his own past.
