Japan's Legendary Yakuza Series Nihon Touitsu Returns with a Food-Themed Spin-off Manga!

Nihon Touitsu, one of Japan's longest-running and most cult-classic yakuza dramas, is returning to its fans not with intense conflicts or dark underworld negotiations, but with mouth-watering dining tables. Publisher Akita Shoten officially released the first volume of the series' new food-themed spin-off manga, Nomikui Douraku ~Nihon Touitsu~, on May 15th. The manga is illustrated by Arata Kawabata, while famous actor Yasukaze Motomiya, who brings the character Renji Himuro to life in the original series, oversees the project to ensure the story remains faithful to the spirit of the series.
Starting in 2013 as a modest direct-to-video (V-Cinema) project, Nihon Touitsu was initially planned for only 10 episodes. However, over the past decade, the story of Renji Himuro and Kenichi Tamura, who strive to unite Japan's underworld, has turned into a massive phenomenon. Reaching over 90 productions with more than 60 main episodes and countless side stories, the series gained significant popularity among female viewers, especially through digital platforms during the pandemic. This new manga project aims to expand this growing universe from a different perspective: through food culture.
Nomikui Douraku focuses on the members of the Yamazaki Ichimon group, who are beloved by fans of the series. The story follows these tough men as they step away from the tense atmosphere of the criminal world to eat and drink at various culinary hotspots across Japan. This approach continues the trend of "tough characters in everyday, human situations," a theme popularized in recent years by works like The Way of the Househusband (Gokushufudo).
