Ojisan to Fixatif: A New Manga Begins, Mending the Wounded Bonds Between a Cat and Two Sisters

Square Enix released the first volume of the highly anticipated new work by beloved manga artist George Mikumo (who uses the name mikumo for this series), Ojisan to Fixatif (おじさんとフィキサチーフ), on April 24th. Serialized in Young Gangan magazine, this work is much more than a classic "cat manga"; it offers a deep drama about the fragility and reconstruction of family bonds. The series is a candidate to be one of this year's most notable releases, especially for readers who enjoy stories with emotional depth.
At the center of the story are Iori Fukushima, who was adopted at the age of five, and her older sister Riko, the biological daughter of the family. After losing their parents in a tragic traffic accident, the two sisters, who had drifted apart, reunite in Tokyo after years of separation. The 10-year age gap between them and the indescribable distance caused by being "adopted vs. biological" siblings only begins to melt with the arrival of an elderly and wise cat named Ojisan (Uncle) into their lives. The cat acting as a silent bridge between these two wounded souls forms the most crucial point of the series.
Although artist George Mikumo is better known for his romantic comedies and works focusing on "otaku" culture, such as Genjitsu no Kanojo wa Irimasen! (I Don't Need a Real Girlfriend!), he transitions to a much more mature and melancholic tone with Ojisan to Fixatif. The artist's new style masterfully reflects the storms and silent moments in the characters' inner worlds. The term "Fixatif" in the series title represents the protective spray used in the art world to prevent drawings from deteriorating, while in the story, it refers to that invisible force that keeps a family on the verge of falling apart together.
For manga lovers, this series is reminiscent of high-emotional-intensity works like March Comes in Like a Lion or My Roommate is a Cat. This dramatic and healing (iyashikei) story from Square Enix shows how individuals who have become isolated in the modern world can hold onto one another. With the release of the first volume, fans have begun to excitedly follow how Iori and Riko will develop in this new living space and what role Ojisan will play in this process. If you are looking for a story that will touch your heart and both sadden and make you smile, you should definitely give this series a chance.
