New Manga from Renji Morita: Makanai Deka no Chōshu Meshi Starts on May 24th

Renji Morita, the author known for his romantic comedy manga ‘That’s My Atypical Girl’, is now appearing with a completely different genre. His new series, titled ‘Makanai Deka no Chōshu Meshi’, will begin its publication life in Japan on May 24, 2024. This gourmet comedy is about a detective solving crimes thanks to delicious food.
Morita’s previous work, ‘That’s My Atypical Girl’ (2020-2023), was a warm and sometimes melancholic story revolving around a young girl with atypical development. The series garnered praise from both critics and readers, particularly noted for its character depth and emotional narrative. The author's move to this completely different genre now is an indication of his versatility.
As its name suggests, the new manga combines the words ‘Makanai’ (chef/catering) and ‘Deka’ (detective). Our detective finds clues for each case in the taste, smell, or presentation of a dish. This concept adds Morita's unique sense of humor to the ‘gourmet detective’ subgenre, which has become popular in recent years. It has not yet been announced which magazine the first chapter will be published in, but it is highly likely to appear in a magazine under Kodansha or Shogakukan.
This announcement came as a surprise to fans of ‘That’s My Atypical Girl’ because Morita had not previously ventured into a similar genre. Nevertheless, the author's skill in character creation and dialogue writing seems likely to make this gourmet comedy special as well. It is not yet clear whether the series will be published on digital platforms in Turkey, but given the popularity of his previous work, it is likely that we will hear news of a translation soon. The trailer for the first chapter and magazine details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
