The Life of Modern Medicine's Dark Genius John Hunter Becomes a Manga: "Resurrection" Has Begun

The manga world is preparing to bring one of history's most interesting and controversial figures to its pages. The new manga series Resurrection - The Phantom of Modern Medicine John Hunter -, written and illustrated by T-ron Talon, officially began on April 6, 2026, in the 9th issue of Shonen Gahosha's Young King BULL magazine. The series, which welcomes readers with a 47-page first chapter and a color opening page, reveals how medical science was shaped in the dark streets of 18th-century London.
At the center of the manga is John Hunter (1728-1793), a Scottish surgeon recognized in medical history as the "father of modern surgery." However, Hunter is a "dark" figure known not only for his scientific achievements but also for his collaboration with grave robbers for his anatomical studies and his ruthless methods of obtaining cadavers. The series begins with a young boy named Robert meeting Hunter, and it focuses on both the discoveries of this genius surgeon that changed the medical world and his mysterious life that pushed ethical boundaries.
The series creator T-ron Talon is known as the illustrator of the globally popular manga Isekai de Cheat Skill wo Te ni Shita Ore wa, Genjitsu Sekai wo mo Musou Suru (I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, Too). Transitioning from fictional worlds to the dusty shelves of real history with Resurrection, the artist may also incorporate Hunter's massive anatomical collection of over 14,000 specimens and his famous students, such as the pioneer of the smallpox vaccine, Edward Jenner, into the story. The fact that Young King BULL magazine generally features adult-oriented (seinen) and deep stories signals that this biographical drama will be handled with a dark tone while remaining faithful to medical history.
Historical medical dramas have always found a unique audience in the manga world with cult examples like Jin or Black Jack. While Resurrection tells the story of surgery's transformation from a "butchery" trade into a scientific discipline, it will make readers question the costs at which science was built. Hunter's revolutionary observations in the medical world and his controversial legacy seem set to satisfy both history buffs and manga lovers looking for compelling character stories.
