New Manga from pupa Creator Sayaka Mogi: Kuroneko-sensei to Hotsureta Kanja-tachi Has Met Its Readers
Sayaka Mogi (also known as Moyuru Kiyoka), one of the first names that comes to mind when talking about horror and surrealism, has returned with a new project that will excite her fans. The author's latest work, Kuroneko-sensei to Hotsureta Kanja-tachi (Black Cat Teacher and the Unraveled Patients), was released with its first volume on June 24 via Hayakawa Publishing's digital platform. Set in a hospital, this "dark fairy tale" tells the story of a mysterious cat figure who repairs physically or mentally damaged, "unraveled" stuffed animals and toys.
Sayaka Mogi left a deep mark on the manga world, especially with the pupa series, which was serialized between 2011 and 2013. Dealing with themes of sibling bonds through extreme topics like cannibalism and body horror, pupa was also adapted into a short-episode anime by Studio Deen in 2014. Mogi's works are known for exploring deep emotional traumas and the dark corners of human psychology beneath disturbing visuals. Her new series, Kuroneko-sensei to Hotsureta Kanja-tachi, processes this melancholic and surreal atmosphere through the repair of dolls in a more fairy-tale-like language.
The first volume of the new manga received full marks from another giant in the industry, Yosuke Takahashi (Mugen Shinshi). In his recommendation blurb on the book's obi, Takahashi praised Mogi's unique world. Mogi has been quite productive in recent years; having recently completed works such as Happy Hypoxia and Girl, Meat Girl, the artist has found a place for herself within Hayakawa Publishing with this new series. This digitally released volume promises a visual feast for readers who love the author's characteristic "sketch-like" and atmospheric drawing style.
This new series is seen not just as a horror story, but also as a metaphorical journey built on "healing." The "unraveling" of the toys and their subsequent stitching by Kuroneko-sensei likely symbolize the fractures in the characters' inner worlds. For Mogi fans, this work may be a sign that the author has evolved from the harsh style of pupa toward a slightly more "healing" but still mysterious direction.
