Manga Adaptation of Shiganai Kengyo Kannushi no Yaoyorozu na Nichijo Begins: A Temple Life Full of Gods!

Square Enix's popular digital platform Manga UP! has added another peaceful story to its library as of today. The popular light novel series Shiganai Kengyo Kannushi no Yaoyorozu na Nichijo (The Daily Life of a Humble Part-Time Priest with Eight Million Gods), written by Satono, received its official manga adaptation on April 22nd. Brought to life with illustrations by Noko Morokoshi, the series offers a wonderful alternative for readers looking to escape the stress of modern life and take refuge in a mystical world.
Our story centers on Shota Yamamiya, a former "corporate slave" (shachiku) exhausted by the intense work pace in Japan. Deciding to take over the family legacy, Hakusui Shrine, after his father retires, Shota soon realizes that this is no ordinary shrine. In accordance with the Shinto concept of "eight million gods" (Yaoyorozu no Kami), the shrine is home to countless supernatural beings. From the head god in the form of a white snake to cherry blossom spirits, many mystical beings welcome Shota's arrival as the head priest with great joy.
Originally published under SB Creative's GA Novel label, the work has garnered attention particularly for its "iyashikei" (healing/soothing) narrative. In the series, Satono explores not only supernatural events but also how a shrine can survive in the modern world. The character Shota runs promotions to advertise the shrine, hires a new miko (shrine maiden), and deals with pests that disturb the spirits. In this respect, the series has a unique structure that blends fantasy elements with the practical challenges of daily life.
Noko Morokoshi's soft and detailed art style is one of the biggest elements supporting the peaceful atmosphere promised by the series. With the start of the manga adaptation, fans of the light novel series have the chance to follow the story in a visual format, while new readers will discover the cute and intriguing aspects of Japanese mythology. If you enjoy supernatural slice-of-life stories like Natsume Yuujinchou, Shiganai Kengyo Kannushi no Yaoyorozu na Nichijo should definitely be on your list. New chapters of the series are expected to continue being released regularly on Manga UP!.
