The Promised Neverland Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary with a Grand Musical: Coming to Tokyo This Winter!

The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland), one of the most beloved thriller and mystery series in the manga world, is returning with a major announcement that will excite its fans. To celebrate the series' 10th anniversary, a brand-new stage musical is being prepared to be performed in Tokyo this winter. Announced in the 19th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, this project will bring the escape struggle of Emma, Norman, and Ray from Grace Field House to the stage, this time accompanied by music and dance.
The musical is being produced by RKX International, which has previously signed off on musical adaptations of world-famous productions such as Kiki's Delivery Service, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Shrek. The production team announced that large-scale auditions will be held for the three main characters at the heart of the story. This means that talented young actors will have the chance to land the roles of Emma, Norman, and Ray. How the musical will reflect the series' dark atmosphere and emotional depth on stage is already a subject of curiosity.
Written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu, The Promised Neverland first met readers in August 2016 and concluded with its 20th volume in June 2020. Having sold over 42 million copies worldwide, the series follows children growing up in an orphanage who discover that they are actually being raised as food for demons. Following the successful anime adaptation released in 2019 and the live-action film in 2020, this musical project is seen as a great step to honor the legacy of the series.
Stage adaptations, known as "2.5D" in Japan, enjoy massive popularity among anime and manga fans. Although The Promised Neverland previously had a stage play in 2021, this new musical format will add a very different rhythm to the story. Fans are particularly impatient to see how the tense mind games between Isabella (Mom) and the children will be told through the language of a musical. Further details regarding auditions and exact dates are expected to be shared in the coming months.
