"UNDER DOCTOR" Volume 1 Hits Shelves: The Story of the 'Secret Doctor' Who Risks His Life Begins

Serialized in Shueisha's legendary magazine Weekly Shonen Jump, UNDER DOCTOR has debuted with its first tankōbon volume. The manga by Kyō Tanimoto hit the shelves in Japan as of June 4, 2024. Having been published alongside giants like Black Clover and My Hero Academia, the series stands out among Jump's new generation of action manga.
The story revolves around an unnamed 'secret doctor.' According to the official description, this doctor treats criminals evading prosecution, injured members of the underworld, or hopeless cases rejected by regular hospitals. But every intervention puts his own life at risk. The concept of "a doctor who risks his own life to save others" combines medical thriller with Jump-style action. The first volume covers the series' opening chapters and deals with the first major case the protagonist encounters.
Author Kyō Tanimoto is launching his first long-running series in Jump with UNDER DOCTOR. Previously known for his short work Golem Hearts, Tanimoto this time focuses on the dark side of the healthcare system and a doctor's ethical dilemmas. Considering that Jump has hosted memorable medical manga like Black Jack in the past, UNDER DOCTOR can be seen as a modern take on that tradition. The series' early positive reviews have already pleased Jump's editorial team.
For manga fans, this release brings a fresh breath to Weekly Shonen Jump's ever-renewing lineup. Readers especially interested in medical dramas and dark hero stories should not miss UNDER DOCTOR. The release date for the second volume hasn't been announced yet, but the weekly serialization is continuing rapidly. Although there is no official announcement for an anime adaptation, like many Jump manga, it is likely to come up in the near future.
