WEBTOON Announces AI-Powered Localization Tools and New Unified CANVAS Platform

WEBTOON, one of the world's largest digital comic platforms, has shared two revolutionary developments for independent creators. The company announced AI-powered localization tools that will accelerate artists' ability to deliver their works to readers worldwide, as well as a new unified platform that brings the entire global CANVAS system under one roof. These updates, which will be rolled out gradually in the spring of 2026, offer a major opportunity for independent artists looking to overcome language barriers.
The newly announced AI-powered Translation Program allows artists to maintain full control while translating their works into different languages. Starting as a beta for artists producing content in English, the program will support Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, German, and Traditional Chinese. WEBTOON officials emphasized that this technology is text-only and that artists' drawings will not be used to train the AI. Additionally, artists will be able to add custom glossaries containing specific terms and story context to the system to improve the accuracy of translations.
The simultaneously introduced unified CANVAS platform standardizes the independent publishing process globally. With the new system, artists will be able to access detailed reader analytics via the Creator Dashboard and manage community interactions from a single hub. Furthermore, the ad revenue sharing program is being expanded to all supported languages, and the payment threshold has been lowered to $25, making it easier for small-scale creators to earn income.
Founded in South Korea in 2004 by JunKoo Kim, WEBTOON has evolved into a massive ecosystem with over 160 million monthly active users today. Operating with Kim's vision that "great stories can come from anywhere," the platform aims with this new move to enable an independent artist to reach a global audience without the need for a professional translation team. The company's presence on the NASDAQ stock exchange and its profitability targets for 2026 also highlight the economic power behind these technological investments offered to content creators.
These updates concern not only content creators but also readers. The revamped CANVAS homepage will offer AI-powered personalized recommendations, making it easier for readers to discover new series in their own languages or areas of interest. For the WEBTOON community, this change marks the beginning of a new era where the language barrier is removed on the path from amateur artistry to professionalism, and more diverse stories come to the forefront.
