Competition Heats Up in Akane-banashi Anime: New Visual and Trailer Released for the "Karaku Cup Arc"

Akane-banashi, one of the most unique and successful series in Weekly Shonen Jump in recent years, continues to take the anime world by storm. The production team for the series, which premiered on April 4, 2026, has announced an exciting new development for fans. A special visual and promotional video (PV) have been released through official channels for the "Karaku Cup Arc" (Karaku-hai Hen), one of the most significant turning points in the story. This new arc represents the first major test for our protagonist, Akane Osaki, as she works to solidify her place in the world of professional rakugo.
Produced by studio ZEXCS and directed by Ayumu Watanabe (Children of the Sea, Summer Time Rendering), the anime blends the traditional Japanese art of storytelling, rakugo, with a modern youth drama. In the newly released trailer, we get a detailed look at the rivals in the Karaku Cup, a prestigious student rakugo championship. Facing Akane are formidable opponents such as Karashi Nerimaya (voiced by Takuya Eguchi), known as the genius of student rakugo, and Hikaru Koragi (voiced by Rie Takahashi), a rising star in the voice acting world. The fact that each character has their own unique motivations for entering this competition is one of the key elements adding depth to the story.
The original manga, written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue, has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since February 2022 and has already surpassed 3.5 million copies in circulation. It placed second in the 2023 Manga Taisho awards and third in the 2022 Next Manga Awards.
