Annecy 2026: The New Stars of Japanese Animation Take the Stage!

Hello anime fans! The Annecy International Animation Film Festival, known as the "Cannes" of the animation world, has finally announced its highly anticipated selections for 2026. This year, Japan is preparing to make a real statement, especially in the festival's "Contrechamp" category, which focuses on innovative and independent productions. The festival, which will take place between June 21-27, 2026, will feature ambitious works such as A New Dawn, Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise, The Obsessed, and We Are Aliens competing for the grand prize.
One of the most notable films in this selection is A New Dawn (Hana Rokushō ga Akeru Hi ni), the feature directorial debut of Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, whom we previously recognized as a background artist for legendary Makoto Shinkai films like Your Name and The Garden of Words. A co-production between Japan and France, the film tells the story of a 330-year-old historic fireworks factory facing the threat of closure and the young people who pursue this legacy. Already sparking great curiosity with its visual aesthetics, the film confirmed its quality by having its world premiere at Berlinale 2026 last February.
For history and drama enthusiasts, Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise (Peleliu: Rakuen no Guernica) stands out. Based on Kazuyoshi Takeda's award-winning manga and directed by Goro Kuji, this film conveys the Battle of Peleliu, one of the bloodiest clashes of World War II, through the eyes of a young soldier. Bearing the signature of Shin-Ei Animation and Fugaku studios, the production handles the horrors of war and the resilience of the human spirit in a harrowing language. Released in Japan in December 2025, the film seems determined to make a splash in the international arena with its Annecy selection.
The festival's other Japanese representatives are also quite colorful. The Obsessed (Toritsukare Otoko), directed by Wataru Takahashi, presents the fun and musical story of a man with obsessions, while We Are Aliens (Wareware wa Uchuujin), signed by Kohei Kadowaki, focuses on the emotional journey of two childhood friends who reunite after 30 years. The presence of so many Japanese productions on such a prestigious platform as Annecy shows how strong the industry is, not only with mainstream series but also with artistic and independent projects. Let's see which production will hold the "Crystal" award this year! Stay tuned for updates!
