Banana Fish Coming to Netflix US in August: New English and French Dubbed Version
Netflix US has announced that Banana Fish will be among the titles added to its library in August. The series, animated by MAPPA in 2018 and highly acclaimed, will be released with a brand-new English dub prepared exclusively for the platform, as well as a French dub for the first time.
Adapted from Akimi Yoshida’s legendary manga published between 1985 and 1994, Banana Fish tells a dark crime and drama story set on the streets of New York. Centering on the strong bond between young gang leader Ash Lynx and Japanese photographer Eiji Okumura, the series explores themes of drug trafficking, political intrigue, and confronting a traumatic past. The original anime received high marks from both critics and viewers, holding an 8.2 rating on IMDb.
Previously available on Amazon Prime Video and some regional platforms, Banana Fish will reach a much wider audience with this new version on Netflix US. It is a matter of curiosity whether the new English dub reunites the original voice cast. Given Netflix's past dubbing work for titles like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Neon Genesis Evangelion, this version is also expected to be of high quality.
The addition of a French dub is a major plus, especially for French-speaking viewers. The Banana Fish manga is quite popular in France, where translations of the series have been on shelves for years. This move by Netflix seems likely to please both its US and international fan base.
