Bandai Namco Apologizes for Unauthorized Attack on Titan References in Sgt. Frog Film
Bandai Namco Filmworks and Bandai Namco Pictures issued an official statement recently apologizing to fans and rights holders for unauthorized references to Attack on Titan in the new Sgt. Frog film. The companies admitted that some scenes in the film included characters and symbols from Attack on Titan, but they had not obtained any approval from Hajime Isayama's publisher Kodansha or other relevant parties for this use.
In the official apology, the statement read: "As Bandai Namco Filmworks and Bandai Namco Pictures, we regret to inform you that we did not obtain the necessary permissions for the references to Attack on Titan in the Sgt. Frog film. We sincerely apologize to all our fans and the rights holders for this situation." The companies also announced that they have begun work to immediately remove or modify the references in question.
Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunso) is a beloved manga series created by Mine Yoshizaki and serialized weekly since 1999. Combining comedy and science fiction elements, the series has previously received multiple anime adaptations and films. Meanwhile, Attack on Titan is Hajime Isayama's work that turned into a worldwide phenomenon; its manga concluded in 2021 and its final film reached millions of fans. This unexpected crossover between the two series has reignited discussions on copyright and ethical use in the animation world.
This incident once again highlighted how sensitive the culture of parody and references is in the anime industry. According to Anime News Network, while Bandai Namco's apology was generally received positively, some fans criticized the late recognition of the issue. Nevertheless, the company's taking responsibility could serve as an example for other producers in similar situations. Now attention turns to the revised version of the film and the settlement Bandai Namco will reach with the copyright holders. If the references are completely removed, significant scenes may need to be re-animated, which could affect the release date.
