Bonobono Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary: A Massive 500-Episode Free Streaming Marathon Begins!
One of Japan's most beloved and longest-running series, Bonobono, is preparing for a double celebration! In honor of the 40th anniversary of the legendary manga created by Mikio Igarashi and the 10th anniversary of the current anime series, fans are in for a massive 500-episode free streaming marathon. Starting on May 17th, "Bonobono Day" (Bonobono no Hi), this campaign promises a true feast of nostalgia for the series' loyal followers.
The most exciting part of the celebrations, the anime streaming, will be available via FOD, TVer, and the official YouTube channel. This massive selection of 500 episodes will be available to watch for free over a total of 50 weeks, with 10 new episodes added each week. This move aims to crown the success of the current series, which was launched by the Eiken studio in 2016 and quickly became a modern classic.
Starting its publication life in 1986 in Manga Life and Manga Club magazines, Bonobono does more than just tell the adventures of a cute sea otter. Through the main character Bonobono and his friends Shimarisu-kun (Chipmunk) and Araiguma-kun (Raccoon), the series blends deep philosophical questions about life with a humorous tone. Presenting fundamental questions like "What is living?" with absurd comedy, the production has sold over 9 million copies to date and has secured an unshakable place in Japanese pop culture.
The anniversary events are not limited to just the streaming marathon. A new commemorative website titled "Bonobono to 40-nen no Koto" (Bonobono and 40 Years) presents the 40-year history of the series to fans with a chronological timeline and special illustrations. Additionally, the 50th volume of the new manga series will hit shelves on July 16th, and a special collaboration cafe will open in Tokyo.
