Danganronpa 2×2's New Scenario 'Slayhem' and Delay: Release Moved to Early 2027

The highly anticipated new game of the Danganronpa series, Danganronpa 2×2, has come to the agenda with a major update. In a statement on July 3, 2026, Spike Chunsoft announced that the game will have an alternative scenario and that its release date has been postponed. While this new story branch called 'Slayhem' is reported to take approximately 35 hours, the game is planned to be released in early 2027.
The release date, previously announced as late 2026, has been moved to the first quarter of 2027 as Spike Chunsoft requested extra time to improve the game's quality. The company emphasized that this decision was made to meet fans' expectations and offer a richer experience. It is said that the 'Slayhem' scenario in particular takes place in an alternative timeline independent of the main game and will reflect the series' classic mystery-thriller atmosphere in an even darker tone.
The Danganronpa series has gained a large fanbase since its first game was released for PlayStation Portable in 2010, both through visual novels and anime adaptations. This universe created by Kazutaka Kodaka is known for murder mysteries revolving around themes of despair and betrayal. Danganronpa 2×2 was announced as the sixth main game in the series and will focus on the story of Makoto Naegi Jr., the son of the protagonist Makoto Naegi. It is also stated that the game will connect to the events of the previous game Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.
Following this delay news, fans are divided. While some players think it's worth waiting for a higher quality production, others are frustrated with Spike Chunsoft's delays in recent years. Nevertheless, the depth that a long side scenario like 'Slayhem' will add to the game is a big plus for loyal followers of the series. A new trailer and more details for the game are expected to be shared at a special event in autumn 2026.
On the other hand, the release date and platforms for Danganronpa 2×2 have not yet been clarified. However, there are rumors that Spike Chunsoft plans to release the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If an official announcement comes soon, this production, which will bring a fresh breath to the series in early 2027, is poised to be one of the most ambitious games in the visual novel genre.
