Discotek Brings Classic Anime Works to Blu-ray: Digimon Frontier and Lupin III: Part II Top the List
Discotek Media has made a comprehensive Blu-ray announcement that closely concerns classic anime fans. According to the list shared by Anime News Network, the company will release more than a dozen productions on Blu-ray this year, including Digimon Frontier, Pani Poni Dash!, Lupin III: Part II, Outlanders, and Samurai Pizza Cats. The list also includes Toradora!, The Big O, Argento Soma, Tales of the Abyss, Infinite Ryvius, Memories, the Patlabor TV series and films, Penguindrum, Lupin III: Zenigata and the 2 Lupins, and Digimon Movies Collection 3.
Discotek is known for bringing many anime that had been forgotten on digital platforms and DVD releases back into the spotlight with high-resolution Blu-ray editions. Founded in 2005 and specializing in catalog anime, the company joined Kodansha in 2023. Continuing on its way with Kodansha's support, Discotek is a publisher closely followed by collectors, especially for titles that will receive their first full Blu-ray release in the West.
One of the most notable works on the list, Digimon Frontier, aired in 2002-2003 as the fourth anime series in the Digimon universe. In the series, characters transform directly into Digimon instead of partnering with digital monsters, which is an important feature that sets Frontier apart from other installments of the series. Lupin III: Part II, meanwhile, is a massive classic of 155 episodes aired between 1977 and 1980. Samurai Pizza Cats is also a comedy classic whose original Japanese name is Kyatto Ninden Teyandee and which became a cult hit in the West due to its fully entertainment-focused dub.
The diversity in the announcement shows that Discotek is appealing to the anime sensibilities of the '80s, '90s, and 2000s all at once. Patlabor is a Sunrise classic of the mecha genre with a police procedural touch; Penguindrum is the 2011 symbolist story by Kunihiko Ikuhara, the creator of Revolutionary Girl Utena. Tales of the Abyss stands out on the list as the 2008 anime adaptation of Namco's beloved RPG series. Works that mecha and science fiction fans can't forget, such as The Big O, Infinite Ryvius, and Argento Soma, also get their shot at Blu-ray. This extensive selection holds great value for the preservation of classic anime archives.
Discotek is expected to announce specific release dates for these publications in the coming months. The topic fans are most curious about is whether English dub options will be included, especially for long-running series. Even though the physical media market is shrinking, this announcement reminds us that anime history should not be lost in digital libraries. Collectors' shelves will be quite full this year.
