Chinese Animation (Donghua) on the Rise in the West: Is a New Rival to Anime Being Born?

The global animation market, which has been under the absolute dominance of Japanese anime for years, is currently undergoing a major transformation. Chinese animations, known as donghua, are no longer confined to China; they are reaching Western audiences through giant platforms like Crunchyroll and Netflix. According to recent analyses by Anime News Network, this rise is not just a trend but is seen as a permanent shift that will shape the future of the industry.
Among the pioneers of this rise are productions such as Heaven Official's Blessing (Tian Guan Ci Fu) and Link Click (Shiguang Dailiren). While Heaven Official's Blessing tells a thousand-year-old love story set in a mystical world, Link Click has received full marks from Western audiences by blending time travel and psychological thriller elements. Especially with the emergence of high-production works like Lord of Mysteries and To Be Hero X as of 2025, the world of donghua has begun to evolve from being just an "alternative" into a mainstream form of entertainment.
So, what makes donghua so attractive to anime lovers? According to industry experts, Chinese animations bring a breath of fresh air with unique genres such as Xianxia (the quest for immortality) and Wuxia (traditional martial arts). Furthermore, Bilibili, China's largest video platform, is making major investments to expand into the international market. Data from 2024 and 2025 show that engagement rates for original content on Bilibili have increased by more than 200% worldwide. This proves that audiences are no longer satisfied with stories coming only from Japan and are hungry for high-quality productions with different cultural textures.
However, there are still some obstacles that donghua must overcome to fully compete with anime. Analysts note that Japanese anime is still one step ahead in terms of the "emotional depth" and the intimate bond established with characters, which has been built over decades. Nevertheless, modern-themed productions like Link Click are rapidly filling this emotional gap. In the future, with more English and local language dubbing support, donghua is expected to become an inseparable part of the anime world and perhaps one day challenge Japan in terms of popularity.
