The first main trailer and voice cast for the popular webtoon adaptation The Vermilion Mask anime have been officially announced. According to Anime Corner, the trailer showcases both action-packed scenes and character designs, giving fans important clues about the atmosphere of the production. The names of the voice actors who will bring the main characters to life have also been revealed.
Created by Lee Jae-eun (author) and Kim So-hee (illustrator), The Vermilion Mask was originally published on the Naver Webtoon platform and quickly gained a large fan base. Set in a dystopian world, the story follows the protagonist who wears a mysterious mask in their quest for justice. The webtoon began serialization in 2021 and was completed in 2023, ending with a total of 120 chapters.
The anime adaptation is being produced by Studio Mir. The studio, which has previously worked on productions such as The Legend of Korra and Dota: Dragon’s Blood, promises high-quality animation and fluid fight scenes for this project. The director is Park Hyun-woo (previously a team leader on the Tower of God anime), and the screenplay is by Lee Jeong-min. The music is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, known for works like Naruto Shippuden and Attack on Titan.
Notable names in the voice cast include Kensho Ono (previously known as Himuro Tatsuya in Kuroko no Basket) as the main character Jin-seok, Saori Hayami (Shinobu Kocho in Demon Slayer) as the mysterious girl Yuna, and Takehito Koyasu (Dio Brando in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) as the antagonist Kang-woo. The trailer also features a short version of the opening theme song "Kizuna" performed by Flow.
This news has been a great source of excitement, especially for webtoon fans. While the adaptation is expected to be faithful to the original series, the studio's previous success with works like Dota: Dragon’s Blood gives hope for quality. Following the release of the trailer, the hashtag #VermilionMaskAnime has started trending on social media. Although an exact release date has not been announced, the series is expected to reach a global audience on Crunchyroll and Netflix in the fall of 2024. More character reveals and a second trailer are likely in the coming weeks.
