Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Tops the Ratings with Its Finale: March Anime Report

The week of March 23-29 marked a very active and emotional period for the anime world in Japan. One of the most talked-about productions of the season, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren), reached a 4.5% viewership rating with its highly anticipated final episode, placing it third in the weekly anime rankings. The series, which bears the signature of Madhouse studio, once again proved with this rating success that it is on its way to becoming a modern classic, thanks to both its visual quality and melancholic narrative since its first day of broadcast.
It wasn't just the Frieren wind blowing at the top of the list; the end of March witnessed the farewells of many important series. Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube, which serves as a rebirth of a classic story, found its place at the fifth spot on the list with a 2.6% rating for its final episode. Immediately after, Blue Miburo (Ao no Miburo), which draws attention with its historical drama theme based on the Shinsengumi, entered the list at seventh place with a 2.4% viewership rate. These figures clearly demonstrate the strong impact of season finales on the Japanese audience and the loyal viewership in front of the television.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is based on the award-winning manga by writer Kanehito Yamada and illustrator Tsukasa Abe. This long-running journey, which began in the autumn of 2023, brought a fresh breath to its genre by addressing life in a fantasy world "after the heroes' victory." It is considered a major success in the industry for a seasonal anime to enter the top three, which is usually dominated by productions that have been running for decades such as Sazae-san, Chibi Maruko-chan, or Detective Conan.
These high ratings and intense interaction on social media have also brought expectations for a second season to a peak among fans. It has become a tradition in the anime world for productions like Frieren, which receive full marks from critics and are commercially successful, to receive new season approvals. As we enter the spring season, these impressive finales are the greatest indicator of how strongly the 2024 anime sector began and that quality storytelling always finds its reward.
