Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!? Enters Top 10 in Japan TV Ratings!

The anime Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!? (known in Japanese as Otaku ni Yasashii Gal wa Inai!?) has gained immense popularity among viewers in Japan. According to the Japan Animation TV Ratings report for the week of April 13-19, 2026, the series drew attention by placing 8th on the list. Premiering on April 8, 2026, the production managed to secure a spot among big-budget series in just its second week of broadcast.
The story offers an entertaining romantic comedy that blends "gal" (gyaru) culture with otaku hobbies. Takuya Seo, a shy otaku who sits behind the class's popular girls Kotoko Ijichi and Kei Amane, discovers through an eraser accident that these cool girls are actually secret anime fans. This unexpected common ground opens the doors to a sincere, funny, and at times emotional friendship between these three teenagers from different social circles.
Behind the production is TMS Entertainment (Studio 6), one of the established studios in the anime world. The series is directed by Arata Mita, while Kazuhiko Inukai leads the screenwriting team. The character designs bear the signature of Rion Matsuda. Originally written by Norishiro-chan and illustrated by Sakana Uozumi, the manga has been published in Monthly Comic Zenon magazine since 2021 and has reached a 12-volume collection as of March 2026.
This rating success shows that the series appeals not only to loyal manga readers but also to a general audience. Its global broadcast via Crunchyroll has made it one of the most talked-about productions of the "Spring 2026" season internationally. If the ratings continue to stay at this level, fans may already start to nurture hopes for a second season. New episodes of the series continue to air every Wednesday in Japan on the TV Asahi channel's IMAnimation W block.
