Gekidan "Haikyu!!" Returns with a New Stage Play: The Excitement of the Inter-High Preliminaries Begins

One of the most beloved stories in the world of volleyball, Haikyu!!, continues to take the theater stage by storm. The new play, which is the latest installment of the Gekidan "Haikyu!!" (Theater Troupe Haikyu!!) project and covers the highly anticipated Inter-High Preliminaries arc, has been officially announced. According to the announcement, performances will begin in Tokyo in December 2024 and continue in Osaka in January 2025.
This new production aims to bring the spirit of Haruichi Furudate's original manga to the stage. This play holds a special meaning for fans of the series, as the director's chair is occupied by Kenta Suga, who brought the character Shoyo Hinata to life in the original stage plays. Combining his experience as an actor with his directorial vision, Suga presents the struggle of Karasuno High School from a new perspective. The teaser visual and promotional video shared with the announcement already showcase the dynamism on the court and the determination of the characters.
The Haikyu!! series was published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine between 2012 and 2020, becoming a phenomenon by selling over 70 million copies worldwide. The stage adaptations achieved great success with the "Hyper Projection Engeki Haikyu!!" series, which began in 2015. The newly formed Gekidan "Haikyu!!" troupe is taking over this legacy to bring one of the most exciting periods of the series to the stage, featuring tough opponents like Aoba Johsai and Date Tech in the qualifying rounds. This arc represents a critical turning point where Karasuno shakes off its "fallen champions" image and plays for the top once again.
Featuring talented names such as Kenshiro Kato (Hinata) and Seiya Wakabayashi (Kageyama) in the cast, this production follows the series' 10th-anniversary celebrations and the global interest generated by the Haikyu!! The Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump film released in recent months. Following this marathon, which will begin at the end of 2024, another play titled "Encounter," which will cover the match against Nekoma High School, is planned to be staged in May 2025. Fans will have the chance to experience the high energy of volleyball once again through the live performances of their favorite players.
