Ghost in the Shell's 5th Promotional Trailer Released: Opening Song by King Gnu
The long-awaited fifth promotional trailer for the new Ghost in the Shell anime has finally been released. The trailer confirmed that the series' opening theme is performed by the famous Japanese rock band King Gnu. The series will premiere worldwide on Amazon Prime Video on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
The fifth trailer showcases the series' dark cyberpunk atmosphere and new main characters, while also debuting King Gnu's energetic and melancholic song. The trailer also features familiar faces from former Section 9 members and glimpses of mysterious new enemies. Production company Production I.G had previously stated that this adaptation would offer a narrative more faithful to Masamune Shirow's original manga.
The Ghost in the Shell series, starting with the manga in 1989, has become a cornerstone of the cyberpunk genre. Mamoru Oshii's 1995 anime film achieved cult status for its visual and philosophical depth. Subsequent works like the Stand Alone Complex (2002-2005) TV series and other productions expanded the universe. This new series, created to commemorate the franchise's 35th anniversary, aims to appeal to longtime fans while attracting new viewers.
King Gnu is among Japan's most popular rock bands. Having previously provided songs for productions like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, the band has prepared a piece fitting for Ghost in the Shell's heavy themes. The series is directed by Kazuya Kise instead of Kenji Kamiyama, and it is said that the writing team will stay true to the original manga.
The series will continue to air on Amazon Prime Video with new episodes every Tuesday. The first season is expected to consist of 12 episodes. For Ghost in the Shell fans, this new adaptation promises both nostalgia and a fresh breath. The full version of King Gnu's opening song is planned to be released on digital platforms in the coming weeks.
