Ghost in the Shell was born from the manga series that Masamune Shirow launched in Kodansha's Young Magazine magazine in 1989. The 1995 animated film, directed by Mamoru Oshii and produced by Production I.G, became a turning point not only in anime history but also in science fiction cinema. The subsequent Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002) and Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (2020), released on Netflix, expanded the series' worldwide fanbase. The Hollywood adaptation released in 2017 once again increased the series' mainstream visibility.
