Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames Remake Film Now Streaming Globally on Netflix
The re-animated compilation film of the Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames arc has officially begun streaming worldwide on Netflix. Thus, one of the series' most iconic and action-packed stories has become accessible to a global audience in a single film format and with up-to-date animation quality.
The remake film covers the Yoshiwara in Flames (Yoshiwara Daienjou) arc, originally aired in 2008 and spanning episodes 139–146 of the TV series. The film had its special theatrical screening in Japan on February 9, 2025, and it was subsequently announced that this new version, produced by Bandai Namco Pictures, would be coming to digital platforms. With the Netflix move, the film became simultaneously available in more than 190 countries with subtitle and dub options.
For those unfamiliar, Yoshiwara in Flames is considered one of the turning points of the Gintama universe created by Hideaki Sorachi. Set in the underground city of Yoshiwara, the story follows Gintoki Sakata, Kagura, and Shinpachi, alongside Yoshiwara's guardian Tsukuyo, as they fight against the city's cruel ruler, Hosen. In particular, the nighttime duel between Gintoki and Hosen, along with the dramatic narrative focusing on Tsukuyo's past, has kept this arc among the highest-rated Gintama episodes among fans for years.
The remake project is not just a nostalgic compilation. All scenes were redrawn from scratch with modern animation techniques for the film, lighting and fight choreography were revised, and the voice cast re-recorded their roles. While the original cast, including Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki), Rie Kugimiya (Kagura), and Daisuke Sakaguchi (Shinpachi), returned, the director's chair was again filled by names who know the series' spirit well. This approach is seen as part of the strategy of the team that previously bid a magnificent farewell to the series with Gintama: The Final (2021) to bring classic arcs to a new generation of viewers.
With a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2019 and spanning 77 volumes, Gintama became one of the longest-running series in shonen history by blending parody humor with samurai drama that suddenly turns serious. The anime, which began in 2006, has built a vast body of work comprising 367 episodes, numerous OVAs, and three theatrical films. This move by Netflix is a continuation of the platform's investments in classic series such as Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and One Piece in recent years. With Yoshiwara in Flames going global, a perfect entry point has also been offered for viewers new to Gintama.
