GKIDS Brings 'Look Back', 'Angel's Egg' and More to Home Cinema
Anime distributor GKIDS announced home video releases of four major films on July 5, 2026. The list includes 'Look Back' based on Tatsuki Fujimoto's one-shot manga of the same name, Mamoru Oshii's cult classic 'Angel's Egg' (1985), the live-action film 'Love & Pop' directed by Hideaki Anno, and Nobuhiro Yamashita's 'Linda Linda Linda'. This announcement is part of GKIDS' strategy to bring both modern and classic anime and live-action productions to audiences on Blu-ray and DVD.
In particular, 'Look Back' generated great excitement. Tatsuki Fujimoto's 2021 one-shot manga, known for works such as Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch, was released in theaters in 2024 and received high praise from critics. GKIDS bringing this film to home video will allow Fujimoto fans to watch it multiple times and access special features. Meanwhile, 'Angel's Egg' is considered one of the most important works in anime history due to Mamoru Oshii's visual poetry and experimental narrative. This film, which has lacked a physical release for a long time, is a major gain for new generations of viewers.
The live-action films on the list are also notable: 'Love & Pop' is an unconventional production focusing on the world of teenage girls, directed by Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno in 1998. 'Linda Linda Linda' is a warm and energetic film from 2005 by Nobuhiro Yamashita, telling the story of a high school rock band. With this selection, GKIDS aims to appeal to a wide audience by featuring not only anime but also different genres of Japanese cinema. The company is previously known for home video releases of works such as Weathering with You and Wolf Children.
Although release dates and special feature details have not yet been announced, GKIDS is known to typically release Blu-ray/DVD a few months after a film's theatrical run. A release for 'Look Back' can be expected in the final quarter of this year, with the other films likely arriving in early 2027. Collectors are especially eager to own a physical copy of 'Angel's Egg', a work that has long been difficult to find even on digital platforms.
