Gundam 50th Anniversary Project Begins: SEED FREEDOM ZERO Coming to Theaters and Classic Series Gets Remastered!

One of the biggest giants of the anime world, Gundam, has already begun preparations for its 50th anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2029. At the "Gundam Conference SPRING 2026" event held on May 15, 2026, an exciting roadmap for the future of the series was shared. The most notable of these announcements was the confirmation that Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, which will tell the prequel story to the 2024 box office hit, will be released as a feature film.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO was originally planned as an OVA (Original Video Animation) 20 years ago but was shelved. Following the success of SEED FREEDOM, which hit theaters in 2024 and became the most successful film in Gundam history by surpassing the 5 billion yen mark, this "lost story" has been revived. Director Mitsuo Fukuda revealed that the script was written 20 years ago by his late wife Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita, and that even the voice recordings were completed at that time. The film will fill the gap between SEED DESTINY and SEED FREEDOM, shedding light on events fans have been eagerly waiting for, such as the "Strike Freedom Raid."
The 50th-anniversary celebrations are not limited to the SEED universe. Returning to the roots of the legend started by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979, a comprehensive remaster project has been launched for the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. This remastered version is scheduled to be released in 2029, exactly on the 50th anniversary. Additionally, it was announced that a new "visual project" is in the works for the popular 90s series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. With these projects, Bandai Namco aims to modernize the legacy of the series.
