Iron Wok Jan! Anime Starts on July 5: New Trailer, Cast and Opening Song Released

Announced in recent years, the Iron Wok Jan! anime adaptation has finally received a release date. The television series of Shinji Saijo's classic cooking battle manga, serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine from 1996 to 2000, will premiere on TV Tokyo and six affiliated channels on July 5, 2025. This news was announced alongside a new promotional video, voice cast, and opening theme published by Japanese media outlet Natalie.
The new trailer highlights the determination of the protagonist Jan Akaneko in culinary battles and his rivalry with Kiriko Kato. The voice cast has been joined by experienced voice actor Masuo Amada, who has previously appeared in productions such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Naruto. While it is not yet clear which character Amada will voice, it is evident that this addition brings great experience to the series. Additionally, J-Pop group Genjibu will perform the opening song. The group's energetic style is thought to be a perfect fit for this cooking-themed anime.
This new adaptation is the first full-scale television anime version of the original Iron Wok Jan! manga. A five-episode OVA series was previously released in 1996, but as a TV series, it will reach a much wider audience for the first time. The series is known for its story that blends the art of cooking with martial arts: Jan Akaneko challenges his opponents using a wok inherited from his grandmother, showcasing different recipes and cooking techniques in each episode. Following Saijo's other famous work in the genre, Mister Ajikko, Iron Wok Jan! is considered a masterpiece for cooking anime enthusiasts.
So why is this series so important? The cooking anime genre has experienced a huge surge in recent years with works like Food Wars! and Yakitate!! Japan. Iron Wok Jan! represents a return to the roots of the genre, emphasizing more realistic recipes, a focus on traditional Chinese cuisine, and psychological battles between characters. The new anime adaptation is expected to appeal to both nostalgic readers and a new generation of viewers.
In the coming days, more trailers, character introductions, and perhaps a second opening/ending song may be announced. Which studio is producing the series is not yet clear, but it appears that Iron Wok Jan! is a candidate to be the most notable cooking anime of the summer 2025 season. Anime fans should not miss the first episode on July 5!
