A New Era in the World of Kamen Rider: Animated Film Coming in Collaboration with Aniplex and Shirogumi!

The legendary name of the Tokusatsu world, Kamen Rider, celebrated its 55th anniversary with a massive event held in Tokyo. At this special event held on April 3, 2026, the series rights holder Toei announced a strategic restructuring that will transform the brand into a global superhero franchise. The most exciting part of this expansion plan is the establishment of THE KAMENRIDER ANIMATED label, which will focus entirely on animation projects. The first project of this new label will be brought to life in partnership with anime giant Aniplex and the Oscar-winning visual effects studio Shirogumi, known for Godzilla Minus One.
The new animation project aims to offer a unique aesthetic by using "graphical CG animation" and "manga-style visuals" instead of conventional 3DCG visuals. This production, which will combine Aniplex's success in the Demon Slayer and Fate series with Shirogumi's technical mastery, is designed to appeal to both loyal fans and a global audience unfamiliar with the series. With this move, Toei is dividing the Kamen Rider universe into sub-brands that appeal to different demographic groups, much like Marvel or Star Wars. In addition to the animation label, THE KAMENRIDER CHRONICLE, which focuses on past Rider stories, and THE KAMENRIDER PREMIUM label for high-budget cinematic productions were also announced.
The event was shaken by big news not only for the animation world but also for the live-action (tokusatsu) side. Kamen Rider MY-TH (Kamen Rider Maisu), which will be the eighth main series of the Reiwa era, was officially introduced. The series, scheduled to air in September 2026, will explore the theme of mythology and legends. Producer Naomi Takebe stated that the series will be about "a lonely hero creating his own legend" and will be based on a small but powerful creature (mouse motif) as a motif. In line with the series' global vision, Kamen Rider MY-TH will meet audiences on international platforms almost simultaneously with Japan.
Not forgetting nostalgia enthusiasts, Toei is crowning the anniversaries of past series with special films. Agito: Chōnōryoku Sensō, which will be released on April 29, 2026, and Kamen Rider Kabuto: Inheritor of Heaven (Kabuto 20th Anniversary Film), which will meet the audience on November 6, 2026, are at the forefront of these projects. Additionally, a crossover film that will bring together the characters Kamen Rider ZEZTZ and Super Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity will be on the big screen on July 24, 2026. This deep-rooted legacy, created by Shotaro Ishinomori in 1971, continues to evolve and compete for the pinnacle of the modern entertainment world even after 55 years.
