Live-Action Blue Lock Film Opens in 8th Place at Japan's Box Office

According to Anime News Network's report dated August 12, 2026, the highly anticipated live-action Blue Lock film opened in 8th place at the Japanese box office. Meanwhile, the Chiikawa anime film rose back to number one in the weekend rankings. This result shows that the film adaptation of Blue Lock managed to enter the top 10 in its first week but couldn't challenge for the top spot.
The series was created by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura and has been published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine since 2018. The story depicts the fierce competition among 300 young players brought together to find forwards who will lead Japan to victory in the World Cup. The manga brought new life to the football genre at the time of its release and quickly became a global phenomenon; by 2024, its total sales had exceeded 40 million copies. This strong fan base has also increased interest in the live-action film.
The anime adaptation of Blue Lock was released by studio 8bit in 2022 and was particularly praised for its match scenes. In 2024, the series' spin-off film, Episode Nagi, was released. Now it's the live-action adaptation's turn; this project shows that the series has extended beyond the anime and manga world to come to life in a different medium. However, the 8th-place opening has led to comments that live-action adaptations aren't attracting audiences to the same extent as animated productions.
The Chiikawa anime film, which topped the Japanese box office this week, reveals that the production bringing Nagano's beloved characters to the big screen is still drawing strong interest. Chiikawa's return to number one proves that animated films based on anime/manga sources are creating a steady audience in Japan. On the other hand, Blue Lock's box office performance is not yet a disappointment when considered as a live-action project; long-running screenings and positive word-of-mouth could carry the film higher.
In the coming weeks, the film's continuity at the box office and international screening plans are a matter of curiosity. Fans are waiting for new official announcements regarding the live-action cast and production details. The Blue Lock universe seems set to continue growing with manga, anime, and film adaptations.
