Samurai and the Prisoner live-action film dropped from 2nd place last week to 5th place at the Japanese box office this week. On the other hand, the production titled SHIBOYUGI: Cloudy Beach entered the box office at 11th place. According to Anime News Network's July 16, 2026 report, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie returned to the list at 9th place, while the 29th Detective Conan film took 10th place.

Holding an important place in Japanese popular culture, Samurai and the Prisoner is a live-action adaptation of the manga series of the same name. The manga began in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2021 and was well-received for blending samurai-era drama with fantasy elements. The film is directed by Kenji Tanaka, with Ryo Yoshizawa and Kanna Hashimoto in the lead roles.
