Good News for Made in Abyss Fans: The First of a New Film Trilogy Arrives in October!

The Made in Abyss universe invites its fans once again into its fascinating yet equally dangerous depths. According to the official announcement made at the AnimeJapan event, the first installment of the series' highly anticipated new film trilogy, Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Awakening Mystery), will be released in theaters in Japan on October 23, 2026. This new production serves as a direct sequel to the second season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, which was released in 2022 and made a significant impact.
The main voice cast, one of the most important elements behind the series' success, returns to their roles for this film. In addition to Miyu Tomita as Riko, Mariya Ise as Reg, and Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, Misaki Kuno, who voices the key character of the second season, Faputa, is also part of the cast. On the production side, the Kinema Citrus studio continues to showcase its quality. Masayuki Kojima returns to the director's chair, Hideyuki Kurata is penning the screenplay, and the music that completes the series' unique atmosphere bears the signature of award-winning composer Kevin Penkin.
Created by Akihito Tsukushi and ongoing since 2012, the Made in Abyss manga has achieved massive success, selling over 22 million copies worldwide. The series is known for the sharp contrast between its seemingly cute art style and the dark, tragic, and sometimes terrifying story it contains. The new film trilogy will cover our heroes' journey toward the mysterious seventh layer of the Abyss. The first released visuals include characters such as Tepaste and Cravagli, who will be joining the story, signaling that the current and exciting chapters of the manga will be brought to the big screen.
This announcement was not limited to just the films; the Made in Abyss brand continues to expand. Just before the film's release, a new roguelite RPG mobile game titled Made in Abyss ~Doshigatai Fushigi na Tabi~ is expected to launch on September 23, 2026. Additionally, events such as the Deep Echoes of Resonance film concert, organized to celebrate the series' musical legacy, keep the community's excitement alive. For fans, 2026 will truly be a year of returning to the both fascinating and heartbreaking world of the Abyss. Details regarding the other two films in the trilogy are expected to be shared in the coming period.
