Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht: Rising Film to Be Shown in IMAX Theaters
The new Madoka Magica film, Walpurgisnacht: Rising, will be released in both regular theaters and IMAX format on August 28. According to Anime News Network, the production will begin screening in theaters and IMAX halls in Japan on the same day. This is also significant as the Madoka Magica universe will be presented with the IMAX experience for the first time.
The film is a direct sequel to Rebellion, which made a big splash in 2013. Akiyuki Shinbo returns in the director's chair, while Gen Urobuchi wrote the screenplay; Ume Aoki handled the character designs, and Yuki Kajiura composed the music. This team reshaped the mahou shoujo genre with a dark narrative in the original TV anime released in 2011, turning Madoka Magica into a cult production. In the new film, Homura Akemi's story and the events of Rebellion's open-ended finale will continue.
Although the production was first announced in 2021, it is known to have gone through a long production process. Carrying the signature of SHAFT studio, the film is followed by a large fan base for both its visual language and Gen Urobuchi's character-driven writing. The IMAX announcement is interpreted as a sign that the film's launch process is accelerating and the release date is approaching.
A new trailer or promotional visual is expected to be released in the coming weeks. Especially when IMAX's image and sound quality combine with SHAFT's unique scene design and color palette, it promises an unmissable cinematic experience for Madoka Magica fans.
