Maebashi Witches Compilation Film Releases Main Trailer: Film Opens in Theaters on October 23
The Maebashi Witches universe is moving to the big screen! The main trailer for the compilation film of the original TV anime, which began airing in April 2025, has been released, and it was officially announced that the film will open in Japan on October 23, 2025. The released trailer brings the TV series' most memorable moments and the magical journey of five witch apprentices back to audiences with a cinematic edit.
Produced by studio Sunrise, Maebashi Witches is a youth and magic story set in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. Directed by Junichi Yamamoto and written by Erika Yoshida, the series aired a total of 12 episodes between April 6 and June 22, 2025. The story follows five girls—ordinary high school student Yuina Akagi and her fellow apprentices at a witch shop, Azu Niisato, Kyoka Kitahara, Choco Mitsuboshi, and Mai Kamiizumi—as they confront both magic and their own personal issues. With character designs by Inami Iwasaki and music by Yuri Habuka, the series stood out for its cute atmosphere and story blended with city promotion.
The compilation film will condense the TV series' 12-episode story into a single film. The trailer shows that the TV series' opening song, "Sugosugi Maebashi Witches!", performed by the main cast, is also being reused. According to Sunrise's official statement, the film goes beyond being just a summary and will include re-edited footage and sound mixing for some scenes. However, the production team has not yet made a clear statement about whether the film will contain entirely new scenes. Such compilation films are generally seen as an opportunity for those who missed the TV series or fans who want to experience the story all at once in theaters.
Maebashi Witches is one of the newest examples of productions collaborating with local cities among the increasing number of "original anime" projects in recent years. Just like city-focused anime such as Zombie Land Saga and Shirobako, the city of Maebashi has seen significant tourism interest thanks to the anime. During the TV series' broadcast, projects such as joint events with the Maebashi Municipal Government and an advance screening of the pilot episode were held. The announcement of the compilation film shows that the series' popularity continues and that Sunrise continues to invest in this original IP. It is not yet clear whether the film will be shown on digital platforms or in theaters outside Japan, but the fact that the TV series was streamed on Crunchyroll strengthens the possibility that the film will also reach international audiences.
